How do you combine a deep love of the land of Israel, with a passion for long distance biking? The answer is easy when you know Shlomo Urbach who has organized the IRONBACH for the past 4 yearsThis is the second time that I had the privilege of participating in this incredible ride, which covers close to 700 kms of cycling over 4 days. For any avid cyclist…..there is no better way to experience Israel than riding from Rosh Hanikrah to Eilat. We rode through lush forests to arid deserts; we rode past 4 seas and climbed thousands of meters of accents. As a Canadian rider…I can attest that in every Israeli cyclist, lies “a want to be” tour guide. There was not a memorial that we passed, or a mountain that we climbed, or a km of road that we cycled across where I did not get a full explanation of what I was seeing and the historical significance of the landmark. The people were warm and wonderful, the challenge was fun and the ride was incredibly well organized. I had many old friends who I joined when I came to participate in this ride. I made many new friends who I met along the way.

I am a Canadian cyclist who is a master’s level racer with many victories and podiums in national and international competitions.

I was privileged to receive an invitation to participate in the Ironbach, a scenic, magnificent, challenging ride of 650kms over four days across the entire and varied landscape of Israel. As fabulous as the scenery was to behold (and it is truly breath taking), the nicest part of the experience was the warm, welcoming camaraderie of the group. As an outsider to what was essentially an Israeli group of varying (but solid) abilities, I became an honourable member, receiving geography, history and hebrew language lessons en route from the nicest group of riders I have ever met.

The icing on the cake was that the ride finished in Eilat on Nov 1st, 2008, the date of my 50th birthday. I couldn’t have had a nicer celebration.  I had a great time and feel like I gained 46 new friends.

Thank you, Shlomo, for allowing me to join and leaving me with memories that I will always treasure. Kol hakavod and keep doing these rides !!!
